Both parents are responsible for supporting their children under the age
of 18 and, in certain limited circumstances, beyond age 18.
In California, the amount of child support to be paid by one parent to the
other is based on established, state-wide guidelines that consider each
parent's income and the amount of custodial time each parent spends
with the children. In addition to monthly child support, a parent or both
parents may be required to pay other expenses, such as health insurance for
the children, child care, and transportation expenses between households.
