"Spousal support" is the term for alimony in California. It is money that
one spouse pays to help support the other after a divorce has been filed. It
can be temporary until the divorce is final or it can be long term after the
divorce judgment is filed and the case is over.
In most cases, the spouse receiving support pays federal and state income
taxes on it. The spouse paying support is entitled to a tax deduction.
The amount of spousal support payable is based on factors such as the
length of the marriage; the marital standard of living; and the age, health,
education, and work histories of both parties.
